Energize

On Tuesday Whaea Gina came in to talk to us about drinks. She colour coded the drinks so ones that were good for you went in green which meant always. Drinks that went in orange meant sometimes and drinks that went in red meant occasionally . Ones that went in green were like  water and milk because they help your body. Ones that went in orange were like juice, flavored water, powerade and flavored milk. Did you know that powerade is half sugar half salt? The drinks that went in red are like fizzy drinks and energy drinks. Whaea Gina told us about the different drinks and why they are good for us and why they are bad for us. She even told us that countdown is not selling energy drinks to under 16 year olds because our hearts can not cope with how much caffeine is in energy drinks. Adults hearts can cope with caffeine better because there hearts are bigger. I never knew that kids hearts could not deal with lots of caffeine because it makes your heart beat too fast. Did you know that your heart is the size of one of your fists and your brain is the size of two of your fists? With what I have learnt I will tell my parents about it so they know too and I will try to drink lots of water and milk.

Cross country

On Friday the 30th of August Paihia school had cross country. When we got to school everybody was excited. At 11:15 everybody started getting ready to go to cross country we all lined up in our class on the court. Some people went by bus and some people went by car. When we got to Bledisloe domain we got set up and then we started the races it started from the 5 year old boys then 5 year old girls and kept going up. When the races started I went to the finish line to cheer the kids on. The five year olds just had to go around the field, the  six and seven year olds did the field and a bit of the drive but 8, 9 and 10 year olds did a lap of the field up the drive and round two paddocks. The 11 and 12 year olds did round the field up the drive through three paddocks and another lap of the field. When it came to my turn as a ten year old girl I was a bit nervous. I ran most of it and only walked a tiny bit but I tried my best and came second to last. Lots of people were cheering me on as I crossed the finish line. I think everybody had a good time because I did but everybody was tired. The people that came first, second or third gets to go to inter school cross country. These are pictures from cross country.

E learning symposium

On the 13th of August me, Kaitlin and two of the kids from Te Maunga  went to the E learning symposium at  Bay of island College. Kaitlin and I got chosen to represent our school and show others how to use seesaw. We got to explain to people about how seesaw helps us.We told them why we use seesaw and how it helps our learning. The schools that were there were Tautoro primary, Kawakawa primary and Ohaeawai primary those were all the schools I can remember. When we got there we went to the college hall and set up when all the schools were there one of the teachers from one of the school groups  welcomed us. Then we got to go do some coding. We made groups with other schools and tested there coding it was so fun. Once everybody got to have a turn at the coding we all went to our stations so people could have a look around. Some of the teachers from other schools came to have a look at our station about seesaw they asked us questions like how is it easier to use than blogger and what do your parents think of seesaw. When they asked us what our parents thought about we gave them a sheet of paper that said what our parents thought of it. It was kind of scary talking to people we don’t know. Overall I had a great time at the e learning symposium.

Science Fair

For the past eight weeks we have been doing Science fair projects. My buddy for the science fair was Kaitlin. Our project was testing cereal for iron. To our surprise we found a lot of iron in Special K and Weetbix but we did not find much iron in Coco Pops or Nutri Grain. We had to get a  special magnet called a neodymium magnet which is really rare and expensive so I asked my Mum if we could borrow the magnets from her schools science department. When we were done all of the testing we created a science board to show our learning. Last Friday was the school science fair I was so excited. The judges were our principal Mrs Lindsay and one of the parents from our school named Danielle. They came and talked to us about our project I was a bit nervous about talking to the judges. At the end of  the day at assembly they announced the winners three teams came in first, two team came second and one team came third so they get to participate in the finals in Kerikeri at the Turner Center. My group got highly commended along with a few other groups. The science fair was so exciting.😀

NED SHOW

Last week at Paihia school we had a show called the NED show come to our school. The lady who was running the NED show at Paihia school told us what his name stood for N=Never give up E= Encourage others D= Do your best. I found the NED show really interesting. The lady who was running the show Nicole did some really cool tricks she used trick ropes for one of the tricks so she could make a rope to climb mount Everest. The show was about helping NED find his mind set. NED found his mind set by using the things his name stood for. When Ned was at mount Everest he meet a yeti named yet and told him don’t say “I can’t do it” say “I can’t do it yet”. The show was so funny and the lady who ran the show did some really cool tricks with the yo-yo string.

Science 😃

At the end of term two in Te Ngahere we started doing science project for the science fair. My science group was Imogen, Talashia and Kaitlin. Our science project is to try to find metallic iron in cereals. Before we could carry out our experiment we made a google form for student voice asked what there favourite cereal was. We picked the top five favourite cereal to test they were Nutrigrain, Weetbix, Coco pops and Milo cereal. Once we have got all the cereals we are going to crunch them up and put a magnet in to see if any the cereal moves. Our next step would be to add water to the cereals  and do the same thing as we did with the non watered cereals. If the cereal moves that means there is a trace of metallic iron in it. One we have done the test we are going to make a board explaining our science. I will post some photos of the experiment once we finish.😃

Paper rocket

In Te Ngahere we have been making paper rockets. We were learning about making paper rockets so we could learn more about the scientific method for the science fair we are doing. We were in buddies. You had to make the rocket from a video. Then you had to test it 10 times each and record your data. After you had recorded all the data then you need to make the rocket but with some sort of modification. Our modification was to give our rocket more fins. When you had modified the rocket you had to test your modified one 10 times each and record the data. Once you had recorded all your data, you had to use the data to make a graph for each set of data. Our hypothesis was that the modified one would fly better but we were wrong the one with no modifications flew better. My buddy and I have completed both our rockets and here are the photos and data.
