Awsome Athletics

Kia ora bloggers. On  Friday the 22nd of November Paihia School went to inter school athletics  day at Bledisloe domain. When we got to school we had to put on a school shirt then we did Karakia. Once we did Karakia we all lined up and waited outside to get put into our transport but first we had to do Karakia as school after that I got to choose a friend to go in the school van with me and three boys. When we arrived at Bledisloe all the schools had to get together to do Karakia again. Then we got into our year groups our first activity was 200 and 400 meter sprints. Then we did shot put then we did long jump and discuss. After we had a break during the break I had a juice and a sausage. After break we did relays then 100 meter sprints then high jump. After that we all went back to our school. Over all I really enjoyed the and my favorite activity was high jump but in high jump I got over in the practice round and then in the real round I knocked off the bar. In long Jump I think what I could have done better was land more steady on my feet. When I was doing shot put I found it hard to not throw the put. What is your favorite athletic day activity?

Amazing Chuck Close Art

Kia ora bloggers. In Te Ngahere we have been doing Chuck close art. This art  was really fun and interesting. First we got a square that had smaller squares and some of the smaller squares were gray and some were white. In the white squares you had to color it in with a light color and in the gray squares you had to do them dark colors. After you had colored in your squares you then put a pattern over each square. After that we joined all the finished  art together it created a person. The people we made were Harry Potter and Batman.

Awesome Interesting Math

Kia ora bloggers. In Te Ngahere we have been doing math our math was called starry eyed. We were learning to follow instructions to make a shape using a radius. When we were drawing the shapes we figured out that if the instructions told you to skip 3 or skip 5 it made the same  shape because 5 and 3 add up to 8. Then in the instructions it told us to use a six point circle and skip 8 and if you keep going back and forth it just makes a straight line because 8 is half of 16. I really enjoyed this math because I did not know that if you use an 10 point circle and you skip 4 it creates a star. What I found hard was following the instructions perfectly to make the right shape. Here is my DLO that I made.

Amazing illusion art

Kia ora bloggers. In Te Ngahere the year 6’s have been making art that looks illusional. The first piece of illusional art we did looked like you were going to get sucked into a spinning spiral. This art was really fun to make. First we had to get an A3 piece of paper and draw  6 straight intersecting lines that went to the edge. Then in every second triangle you had to draw up curves and on all the other triangles you do down curves. Then you had to go over all the lines carefully in vivid. After you have done that you pick two different colors. With one color you colored in  every second line in up curves and a different color on every second line of the down curves. Then you shade in every other line of the up curves with the same color so it looked like the shadow, then you had to do the same with the down curves two. Have you ever done any illusional art? Here is my photo.

Tessellation

Kia ora bloggers. In Te Ngahere we have been making tessellations, a tessellation is when you use one four sided shape it could be a regular or irregular shape, then you duplicate the shape and translate it so that it joins up without any gaps or without any part of the shape overlapping. Did you know that tessellations are both maths and art? A tessellation is math because you use translation, rotation, reflection and symmetry. A tessellation is art because it makes a picture and you can make tessellations that make shapes look like animals. What I found challenging about this was getting the shapes to fit perfectly without any gaps or without overlapping.

Energize

Kia ora bloggers. In Te Ngahere on Monday Whaea Gina came in to talk to us about healthy eating. Did you know there are four food groups? The food groups are Dairy and dairy products, Meat  and meat alternatives, Grain food and Vegetables and fruit. Grain food is good for you because it is a great way to start your day and it is really good for your brain and it gets you up and going. Vegetables and fruit are good for you because they give you vitamins and minerals, but the natural sugar in the fruit is still not good for you it is better than normal sugar but too much is still bad. Meat and meat Alternatives, Do you know what a meat alternative is? A meat alternative is  a food that vegetarians can eat but it still gives you the same goodness as meat, meat is good for you because it give us protein and helps us grow. Dairy is good for you because it gives you calcium and calcium is good for your bones. What I will do with this new learning is try to make sure I have a least one thing from a food group in my lunch box.

Duffy Show

Kia ora bloggers. Last week on Friday we had a Duffy show. The peoples names  in the show were called Duffy (Dylan) Sam (Unya) Aunty Grace (Emma - Rose). The show was about a boy who went to his aunt's house and tried to get his cousin to read instead of gaming all day. I really enjoyed the show because it was really funny. My favorite part was when the puzzler came in and mixed up the letters then you had to figure out what the letter.

Explain Writing

In Te Ngahere we have been writing to explain why the Paihia School pump track is a special place to our community. I found this writing very challenging because I did not get to use I, me or we  and it was hard to not to use persuasive words. Not using I, me or we made me realise that we used those words a lot in our writing. I am hoping you can give me some feedback on your experience writing explain pieces of writing thank you.

My Writing:

Do you have a special place where you can go and have fun with your family? Have you heard
of Paihia schools pump track ?  Paihia schools pump track is a special place to our

Dry land swimming

In Te Ngahere on the first week of school on Thursday Tracy from swim safe came to see us to talk about being safe in the water and on boats. Tracy  taught us lots of rules for going to the beach or river and going on a boat. Some of the most important rules when going to the beach or a river is to make sure you have a responsible adult watching you not a teenager who is just going to look at their phone, also if you don’t feel safe going into the water don’t go in. One of the most important rules when going on a boat is to make sure you are always wearing a life jacket even if you are only a few meters off the shore line. I made a DLO of the top five boat safety rules can you give me any feedback or tell me about any other boat rules that you think are a good idea to put on my DLO. Thank you.

Amazing Free Standing Steam

In Te Ngahere on the first day back at school  we did a steam challenge STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. Our goal was to make a free standing object with limited equipment. My group was Ātāahua and Autumn. Our steam challenge was to build a free standing newspaper tower out of  two sheets of newspaper and 30 cm of tape. Autumn and  Ātāahua held together the tower and I taped it together. When it was time to measure our came to 75 centimetres and the winning tower came to 1 meter 18 centimetres. Having a wide base made my groups tower work well because the wide base made the tower more stable. Trying to get our tower to stand up without falling over was very challenging. I think what we could have done better was to communicate better and listen to each other's ideas.

The Importance of a Quality Blog Post

In Te Ngahere we have been learning how to make a quality blog post. I learnt that it is important to add a catchy title to interest the reader. We made DLO’s to explain what we learnt about making quality blog posts. We explained what you need in a  quality blog post and why you need it in your post. It shows you the importance of the six things you need to make a quality blog post. I think what I could have done better was explain sources by using more detail. I hope you enjoy my DLO. What could I have done better?

Making Hummus

On Tuesday Whaea Gina came and taught us how to make tasty homemade hummus so we do not need to buy it from the supermarket. The recipe is one can of chickpeas, one tablespoon of peanut butter, some salt and pepper, cayenne pepper and some garlic and lemon. Then you blend it all together in a blender and you have an amazing hummus to have with your crackers and carrot. This is a healthy dip and you know exactly what is in your hummus.

Beach clean

On  Friday the 13th of September Paihia School had  a beach clean up. All the class went at  different times my class went in the morning. Once we had done the role we all went and put our shoes on and lined up. Once we got to the beach the teacher told us to get into groups of five we each got some gloves and then a rubbish bag per group. While we were down at the beach picking rubbish we found lots of cans and bottles in between the rocks.  We figured that because there is  a liquor ban people try to hide that they have been drinking and put there bottles in between rocks. We also found lots of cigarette butts around rubbish bins and seats. I learnt that some people do not listen to the rules maybe  because they do not agree with rules.

Story Beats

In writing we have been using story beats to help us plan our writing. Story beats are the main parts of the story that help set up how the story is going to work. We had four pictures to choose from to make a story using the story beats. When we have used the story beats to plan our writing, we  wrote out the main parts of the story and just added more detail in between beats. Here is an example my group made to help us write our own writing.

We used this photo to base our story on then we started using  the story beats.

Once upon a time...
There was a black murky shadow who lived in the darkness and
loved his son
Every day….
They would go on adventures during the night, exploring
woods and abandoned houses and the shadow would
tell his son do not leave my side or go wandering off
because you do not know what could happen or who
you  could run into.
Until one day...
As they were exploring an abandoned house, his son
walked off into a different room and the wind blew the
door locked
Because of that...
The murky shadow tried  to open the door every night
to rescue his son.
Because of that...
He was seen by a person, who got scared, dropped
their keys and ran away
Because of that...
The shadow was able to unlock the door
Until finally...
He got his son out of the room
And ever since then….
they stick together and stop going into abandoned
house
The moral of the story is...
Stick with your family
